What Izzit ?

Post by just bob »

I took this to the knife club this past week and we had some fun with it. Made by Henckel's and has a wooden handle. Apparently not stainless. As evidenced by the potato in the picture "it will cut" but not in a convenient way and only a small section of the potato at one time. Very awkward when cutting a vegetable. The primary guess at the club was that was what the knife was made for but others thought crinkle cut and julienne were way too modern for the knife that may have been made in the 1950'sor before? Also a dog groomer or some kind of detangling tool are possibilities or ? . I told them I would post this on AAPK and most assuredly someone had one like it or maybe even the catalog that this was sold in. I would appreciate all input.

My money is on the crinkle cut but let's see what some of the real pros say. ::shrug::

Well just a big ole guess here... I remember seeing radishes with crinkle cut tops as a kid. I think its for garnishing specific types of veggies.

It's a scallop knife for opening the shells.

Scallops don't have flat edges like clams, but "wavy" edges on the opening side. The wavy edge side of the blade was pushed into the wavy edge opening of scallop to force it open.

That's amazing! and a picture to boot. We weren't even close at the knife club. I'll report back to them and watch their amazement. Thank you for posting that.

No. It's a vegetable decorating knife as was mentioned above.

I think you are misunderstanding the catalog description, the scalloping they are referring to is the design it makes in the vegetable.

I have a couple of these, the edges are sharp and thin to cut cleanly, if you opened several scallops with this you would destroy the cutting edge.

Well, maybe not a vegetable knife per say, but it is not a scallop knife either. :)
Upon translating the three other language descriptions in the Henckels catalog page, they read as follows...
German : "colorful cutting knife"
French : "Knife to carve slices"
Spanish : "Fruit knife"
The English word "scallop" in the catalog page does refer to the shape of the blade and not the purpose.
