Re: Back in action
Thank you for the encouraging words everyone. That is the seventh spring knife I have made so far. These types of knives are a slow learn, so many little details to figure out. Someday I hope to make knives as nice as the ones Ken Erickson makes. It is great to have makers of that caliber on this si...

Early last year I was trying to transition from fixed blades to folders when a shoulder injury sidelined me from any activties requiring the use of my left arm. Here is a knife I started in May of '09 and just finished . I am a little rusty and it shows in the blade grind but I really like the way t...

Re: Batch of knives from files
Nice knives, beautifull wood! I was getting the invalid file message the last time I tried to post an attachment. I resized my photos by clicking on the "publish this folder to the web" tab in my photos folder and that solved the problem. Hope this helps.

Wow that was quick! Thank you. I always thought it was a genuine Remington. Bernard Levine had me second guessing myself. Thanks again.

Re: Is this Remington a fake?
All the parts on this knife are original to the knife. It is not unusuall for old knives with annealed tangs to show some wear/damage on the run up area of the tang. That little dent on the pen blade tang could have happened simply by dropping the knife when it was closed. What I was implying with m...

Re: Is this Remington a fake?
Good points on the shield everyone. Here is a scan of the KW column so you can see the similarities between my knife and the one B. levine writes about. The compressed file size makes it hard to read. If you zoom your computer screen to 150% you can see more detail.

Is this Remington a fake?
Levines' column, in the Nov 2008 issue of Knife World, shows a knife that looks exactly identical to the one I have posted below in every aspect except the one he shows is an easy opener. He explains, in that column, why he thinks the knife is a fake. Some of his points are: wrong shield(should be a...

Re: Buck Dymondwood
I picked up two last month. One is a #301 stockman and I think the quality sucks ::td:: Blade wobble, weak snap, and I do'nt like the way the blades are ground. I Could have just got a bad one though and I gotta give Buck credit for bringing production back to the U.S.A. The other is a #346 4 1/2&qu...

The Barlow markings on that knife refer to the scrimshaw artist Stephen Barlow. I have a barlow style S. Barlow knife some where. I'll post a pic if I can find it.

I could not be more pleased with the way the giraffe leg bone slabs look on this knife. My crummy pictures do not do them justice.

Re: Customs, keep or use?
From what I have watched on the secondary market only the work from well known makers increase in value. Knives by lesser known makers usually sell for far less than their original price. I think well made factory knives, old and new, is the way to go for investment purposes. Life is short, use and ...

Redrummd, I really did'nt want to show this angle. It reveals the one flaw that really bothers me. RJ 002.jpg This photo shows visible gaps between the bolsters and liners. The first knives I made the bolsters were riveted to the liners, chopped on is the cutlers term, each knife a little tighter th...

The can opener might hold the clue to who made the knife. I think WWII vintage Ulsters have the Imperial pat. "safety" can opener. I don't know, just a guess

Re: First good folder
I think there are a lot of variables that come into play when setting bolster rivets. The malleability of the pin material is definitely one of them. Perfectly round precision reamed holes and precise countersinking is also important (you will have a hard time filling a square hole with a round pin)...

Thank you everybody for the encouraging words, Today was the day to start enjoying the fruits of my labor so I honed the knife up and put it through its' paces on a wood dowell. First good folder
Hey everybody, I started foolin' around making knives about eight years ago, nothing serious, just for my own amusement and aggravation. Last spring I decided to try my hand at making folders. It was a little more difficult than what I expected, infact it was down right hard. I have made six knives ...

Re: How to cut a nail nick ??
km 3, you are absolutely correct. Stamping the blade that close to the top displaces the metal and leaves a bump on the spine. Found that out the hard way. The way I get around it is; scribe the layout leaving about 1/4" between the top of the pattern and the edge of the barstock and drill my h...

Re: How to cut a nail nick ??
Cutting a clean nailmark has been one of the most difficult aspects of folder making for me. No matter how much I practiced with a flex shaft tool I would occasionally have them get away from me and ruin my blanked blades and it was back to square one. A big ugly nail mark ruins the apperance of a b...
