Re: Case Trapper finished
Just wondering if the TIG welding idea came from my post about using that method for restoring the snap on worn knives? Not saying that anyone with common sense and a TIG welder couldn't come up with it on his own, but it would be nice to know if my thread actually helped someone. Beautiful rebuild...

Case Trapper finished
Thanks to Muskrat Man for the backspring!
The handles are cow bone dyed with leather dye and hand jigged. The tangs were badly worn, so I built those back up with a tig welder and it brought back the snap.
I cleaned a gobbler with it this morning and it worked like a charm!

Looking for a backspring for a Case 6254 Trapper
I really don't want to make a single blade from this. It was free, so I figure it's well worth trying to fix.

Re: Big Bolsters and Bocote
Super nice! I would have liked to see some in-progress pics. Can't quite picture the conversion. Glenn Glen, I didn't take any along the way because I didn't really expect it to turn out very well. Here's what it looked like before though. ::dang:: The handles and bolsters were the shell type attat...

Re: Big Bolsters and Bocote
Appreciate the comments guys! This ones my favorite so far. Bigger than I want to carry, but not too heavy and feels good in the hand.
You're pretty safe!muskrat man wrote:Excellent work. Hope you don't decide to start doing this for money. If so I'm in trouble

Big Bolsters and Bocote
I picked up this like new Imperial electricians knife off the "bay" and was dissappointed to find that it had shell handles/bolsters and thinner blades. I was expecting something more like a Camillus. Imperial even went to the trouble of making the liners look brass (they ain't!) I've been...

Re: What did I get myself into.........
Thank you all again. I'm gonna give it to an old friend of mine. He's only 71 but the guy is a walking talking time machine. I always enjoy every minute I spend around him. I showed it to him before it was finished and he seemed real struck on it. I personally don't like brass and won't ever carry i...

Re: Do ya think this'll work?
You're both probably right. That knife was given to me by a lady over on Primitive archer. I had posted some pictures of a knife I rehandled and expressed that I had an interest in learning to work on and repair knives. I DON'T KNOW THIS PERSON. Just that they were kind enough to send me a handfull ...

Just staring at that old Case and remembered having the Buck 319............Hmmmmm ::idea:: Maybe? The Buck means nothing to me but the Case does. Not trying to fool anybody either, I just wanna know. So without tearing them both apart...has anybody tried it? I guess I should make myself more clear....

Re: What did I get myself into.........
Thank you all...I am humbled. Muskrat man, I don't even know for sure what "pinched" is  I cut the lines in with a handsaw file. The flat spots on the ends are from carefully sticking it to a belt sander. You fellers will have to look over me because I really don't know poop from app...

What did I get myself into.........
I've been staring at this old hulk for days wondering what I could do with it. I had no nickel to replace the bolsters with, but I found a big fuse at work that had a giant brass washer on it... ::hmm:: ....... ::idea:: I'm not sure exactly what the parent knife is called and I sure don't know what ...

How do I fix this?
I posted this over in the Case forums and most agreed it was worth trying to save. It has NO life at all in the backsprings. Not sure if that's from the busted liners or something wrong with the temper or just wear. I can fix the wear. Can backsprings be retempered? What to do about the liners? Sorr...

Re: What is this, and is there any hope for it?
I haven't opened it up yet, but that could easily be part of the problem Elvis. I use a Tig welder almost every day and a repair like that wouldn't be any problem. What I'm concerned about is the temper in the backsprings. I know NOTHING about how they are supposed to be. If I knew...i'm sure I coul...

Re: What is this, and is there any hope for it?
Thank you Knifaholic, I considered that as a possibility just a few minutes ago. ::dang:: I'd like to repair it and give it back. It belonged to the mans Grandfather. He said he'd kept it for years hoping to fix it himself and when he found out I had an interest in learning to repair knives, decided...

Re: What is this, and is there any hope for it?
If the frame wasn't busted and the backsprings were good...I think I could save it. I suppose one could copy the frame and make one. If the springs have been burned and lost their temper, or just too weak...reckon they could be retempered?

What is this, and is there any hope for it?
A friend gave me this today. I don't know anything about Case knives, but i'm pretty sure this one is pretty old. The blade as no pattern number. The master blade says Case tested XX The backsprings have no snap. Not sure if that's because of the cracked liners or if the thing has been burned. The s...
