ADDITIONAL INFO: This is the classic Western L39 pattern made for Montgomery Wards under the Western Field brand name. It had the famous Western bifurcated tang with leather handle & aluminum birds head pommel. When I checked Harvey Platt’s book on Western, (The Knife Makers Who Went West), I saw the L39 pattern first shown in the 1941 catalog reprint and last listed in the 1959-1960 catalog reprint. It would seem a logical assumption that this knife was made between 1941 & 1960. The sheath says “MADE IN GERMANY,” so I imagine it is not the original sheath. The sheath could be repaired, but I will leave that to the new owner. This knife will make a nice addition to someone’s collection or an outstanding enhancement to a lucky hunter’s field gear!
