Item # 50394 - Western #244 Hunting Knife
37_50394_1414538586_1.jpg
More Details

MAKER:   Western

PATTERN:   #244 hunting knife

OAL:   8-5/8”

BLADE LENGTH:   4-1/2

GUARD:  Aluminum

HANDLE:  Pearl celluloid

TANG STAMPS:   WESTERN/BOULDER, COLO./PAT. NO. 1,967,479

SHEATH:   Leather factory sheath

CONDITION:   Excellent

DAMAGE:   Some scratching of blade. Normal wear to the sheath and a stain on the front of the sheath.

BLADE WEAR:   Minimal. Blade is full length, but has been sharpened.

AGE:     Prior to 1950

MADE IN:   USA

ADDITIONAL INFO:   This is an excellent carbon steel Western Bird and Trout knife, model #244.

According to C. Houston Price the tang stamp dates this knife from 1931 to 1950. The earliest reference I have to this knife is in the 1941 Western catalog reprints in the Harvey Platts book, “the Knife Makers Who Went West.” It appears the 244 pattern was introduced between 1936 and 1941; 1936 being the next previous catalog reprinted in Harvey Platts’ book. This knife is one of the nicest old Westerns I have seen. Here is your chance to add it to your collection.

Western History:

About 1984 Western was purchased by the Coleman Company, (the Coleman Lantern folks). In 1991 Camillus Cutlery Company purchased Western. Camillus of course closed in 2007. The old USA made Western knives are long gone. In my opinion the Western knives made prior to the purchase of the company by Coleman are some of the finest carbon steel knives ever made! Here as a chance to add this one to your collection or to your field gear!

MAKER:  Western Cutlery Co. for Montgomery Wards.

PATTERN:  Western L39 pattern

OAL:  9-1/4”

BLADE LENGTH:  5”

GUARD:  Brass

HANDLE:  Leather

TANG STAMPS:  WESTERN FIELD/MADE IN U.S.A.    REAR STAMP:  60-1559

SHEATH:  Leather

CONDITION:  Excellent

DAMAGE:  Normal wear, light pitting to blade. Sheath has cut stitching & cut in the back of the sheath.

BLADE WEAR:  Has been used & sharpened, but appears full.

AGE:  Circa 1941-1960

MADE IN:  U.S.A.

ADDITIONAL INFO:  This is the classic Western L39 pattern made for Montgomery Wards under the Western Field brand name. It had the famous Western bifurcated tang with leather handle & aluminum birds head pommel. When I checked Harvey Platt’s book on Western, (The Knife Makers Who Went West), I saw the L39 pattern first shown in the 1941 catalog reprint and last listed in the 1959-1960 catalog reprint. It would seem a logical assumption that this knife was made between 1941 & 1960. The sheath says “MADE IN GERMANY,” so I imagine it is not the original sheath. The sheath could be repaired, but I will leave that to the new owner. This knife will make a nice addition to someone’s collection or an outstanding enhancement to a lucky hunter’s field gear!
