Item # 57819 - Antique Schrade Walden NY USA Muskrat 787 Etched Blade IMPROVED MUSKRAT
1021_57819_1461284441_1.JPG
More Details

3-7/8” round bolstered muskrat. SCHRADE WALDEN NY USA, 1950’s to 60’s era. Mint blades, never sharpened, IMPROVED MUSKRAT etch. Great snap, no wobble. Single backspring design.

The front Peachseed handle is black composition (one tight pin crack at the lower main pin). The back handle is genuine Peachseed brown bone, no cracks. Unusual, I have never seen an example with both handle types. Likely a transition knife made when bone handles were being phased out.

Item # 57791 - Schrade Walden 138L Bowie Hunter
37_57791_1461248784_1.jpg
More Details

MAKER:   Schrade Walden

PATTERN:   H-15 fixed blade

OAL:   9-3/4” (9-3/4” is the catalog listing for the correct size, so this blade is still full length).

BLADE LENGTH:   5-1/8”

GUARD:   Steel

HANDLE:   Stacked leather ring

TANG STAMPS:   SCHRADE-WALDEN/N.Y. U.S.A.

SHEATH:   Leather

CONDITION:   Excellent

DAMAGE:   Sharpening scratches on the blade, minor surface pitting, normal usage wear, see pictures.

BLADE WEAR:   Minimal; blade appear to be nearly full and is full length per original factory specs.

AGE:     Made prior to June 1973.

MADE IN:   U.S.A.

ADDITIONAL INFO:   The 138L “Bowie Hunter” is often mistaken for the H-15 “Utility Hunter” and vice versa. Both patterns were introduced about the same time, about 1958 and they ceased to be listed in Schrade’s catalogs after the name change (from ‘Schrade Walden’ to ‘Schrade’) in June 1973. The old pictures from Schrade Walden show the knife with BOWIE HUNTER etched on the blade. If this knife was ever etched, the etch has long since gone. In eBay listings the Bowie Hunter and Utility Hunter are often listed as military fighting or combat knives, though neither pattern was ever purchased by the DOD for issue to troops. It is possible that some troops carried them in Vietnam as personal knives that were sourced from civilian sources, but they were not military issue. The sheath of this knife appears to be original but with a replacement strap for the handle. The new strap is heavier and more functional than the original, in my opinion. These knives were popular hunting knives and are large enough to handle any North American game animals. Add one to your collection today!
